On April 28, several A-SMYLE alumni held an event entitled Fashion Show Fundraiser at DAH Theatre in Belgrade, Serbia. Since November 2012, Sanja Djuric and Ana Janosev, both, ’09; Milica Petkovic, ‘12; and I–having first collected clothes through various clothing drives and donations conducted by alumni and staff–had the aim of redesigning the collected clothes, displaying them at a fundraiser exhibition, and then offering them for sale. While working on the long-running project Let’s Learn English Together with a Belgrade Roma community, we learned that the children in this community needed a mini-soccer field restored. We decided to donate the proceeds from the fashion show to the new mini-soccer field.
In all, we presented over 65 different clothing items at DAH Theatre along with accessories. During the fundraiser, guests were treated to music by A-SMYLE alumnus, Milos Acimovic, ’12, who played guitar. Apart from the music, there was also candlelight and a projector showing photos of us hard at work and the clothes we had produced over the past several months. In addition to the general public, guests included 20 alumni from different generations, American Councils staff, the representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade.
