Lili Valtcheva, YES Alumni Coordinator for Bulgaria
This is the third month I’ve volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Bulgaria. I really feel like they are my family now because even though we are small group of volunteers, we always have fun helping building the houses for those in need and with all the construction, cleaning, and building work.
We learn a lot, and we see the results of our community service. After all the long process and all the hard work, houses for two families were built and ready for use. The families finally received their keys and with smiles, not only from the parents but from the all excited little kids.
This made me so happy and filled me with joy and the power to continue doing volunteering, because of the work we do. You feel enchanted by what’s been accomplished and by the people around you. That is how people make the world a better place: helping each other, cooperating, seeing other perspectives, cultures, and problems, which leads to understanding, helping, and acceptance.
