Why I Applied for the YES Program

It was October, 2018 when I first learned something about the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program. I saw an online invitation to apply for this exchange program which said something like “If you are in 9th or 10th grade apply for YES Scholarship by October 31st “. I was confused whether I should or shouldn’t apply for the program.

I discussed it with my parents and my English teacher. They both weren’t very sure I would be able to win the scholarship. My teacher said that I first would have to improve my English speaking skills and coherence but she also said that a missed opportunity is a wasted opportunity. And that sounded very encouraging to me. I wanted to prove my parents and teachers wrong even though I knew that the chance of being a finalist on such program is very small.

I applied. I wanted to travel, to meet new people, to learn new things, to explore new culture, food and lifestyle. In my wildest dreams I never dreamed of visiting this country at such a young age. There were many challenges throughout the application process but I thought I would go through them.

And here I am – a finalist on this amazing program that gives unique chances. I will encourage everyone to apply to the K-L YES Program if they are ready to take the opportunity and responsibility.
