To mark International Education Week—an initiative of the US Departments of State and Education that promote international exchange programs and the benefits of those exchanges—the YES Alumni Association in Macedonia organized their third annual student competitions which ran from November 12-22, 2012.
High school students wrote essays on the topic “Our differences unite us,” while elementary school students painted pictures representing “Different cultures in the world.” Winners of the essay competition received English books as their prizes while winners of the best drawings received toys and school supplies. There were so many great entries that we had a hard time deciding the winners!
We think that this project increased enthusiasm for cultural exchange and improved critical thinking among the high school students who participated. The younger students who participated—in 1st – 5th grade—benefited from learning about diversity and different cultures.
